Hormones are powerful chemical messengers in the body, controlling everything from the reproductive
system to mood, sleep, and appearance. Yet many people, men and women alike, are unaware that even minor hormonal imbalances can cause symptoms ranging from inability to lose weight to fatigue to uncontrollable sugar cravings.
Turner, a naturopathic doctor, used her own struggles with hormonal imbalances to develop a revolutionary three-step program. Through sel… More >>
The Hormone Diet: A 3-Step Program to Help You Lose Weight, Gain Strength, and Live Younger Longer
I am a compounding pharmacist and nutrionist so I read a lot of diet books to recommend to my patients. I was intrigued by the title of this book, so I bought it. What a major disappointment! Many hormones are discussed in the book with lots of good information, but I kept reading and reading and still had no clue what to eat. No concrete plan whatsoever or even daily menus. It is like an endocrine medical school course. Here we are at page 181, a detox program starts. Some tips come, but then, it is right back to the endocrine course.
At Chapter 10 diet or page 224, the diet finally starts. Again, no daily menus are given. No calories. Followers are not told how much proteins, fats, or carbs they should eat. Very confusing. The author says she hates certain foods like pistachios without giving any reasons why!! They are rich in lutein. She has lots of wrong information. She hates saturated fats as they can lead to inflammation and can make people gain weight. Wrong. The latest research clears saturated fat from heart disease. Fat-free dairy that she favors is linked to infertilty. Full-fat dairy leads to weight loss as it is rich in CLA. She has recipes with vinegar, but it is bad for hormones since it is yeast friendly. She likes soy, but it is bad for thyroid (phytates) and it lowers testosterone in men!!
I gave the book two stars as the information on hormones is quite good. However, the diet which almost does not exist has no concrete plan. The food choices are inaccurate and some are totally bad for hormones. I will continue to recommend to all my patients (Master your Metabolism by Jillian Michaels or The Perfect 10 Diet by Michael Aziz) as simpler plans on what to eat, and the Sexy Years by Suzanne Somers on understanding hormones.

The information and education in this book is the first I have seen to clearly outline a lifestyle which is practical to follow with definitive results. I am considered a healthy fit individual and have never eaten “unhealthy”. However, had daily fatigue, joint pain (sports injuries), IBS etc. for 20 years. After only 1 month of following Dr. Turners diet I have the energy back of an 18 year old (I am 44), no joint pain and no digestive symptoms at all. I am truly amazed that in 20 years of seeking medical care for all the above the only answer I was every given was “you have to learn to live with it”. I highly recommend this book.

At the age of 52, I feel like I have read every diet book out there and tried every program. Both my husband and I needed to gain control over our health, and ultimately our weight. Reading The Hormone Diet was one of the smartest and best things that we have ever done. We both feel so much better now that we have lost weight and, more importantly, learned how to shop and eat properly. Not only have we lost weight and inches but I have also stopped using one of my blood pressure medications and hopefully will be off my cholesterol meds in the near future. My hair loss even stopped and many of my previous complaints disappeared. Overall, the program was easy to follow and the benefits have been amazing. We would strongly recommend this book to anyone, and we are looking forward to showing off our new bodies this summer!

I read many health and diet books. I have now read two books about hormones. The Hormone Diet and The Perfect 10 Diet–see my review of that book on this site. I was very excited to read The Hormone Diet and bought it at once. I am no longer excited, and I will try my best to explain.
Mostly my biggest problem with The Hormone Diet is that, well, I read the book from cover to cover, put it down, and I have absolutely no idea what I read. I just did not take anything away from it. Or, perhaps what I read, I already knew, so it made no lasting impression on me. You know, when you read something, and it stays with you—you think about it. Like a good movie, for example. You think about it afterwards. It stays with you. That is absent here. Big time.
My other concern is, well, it is a diet book, but, please tell me what to eat—give me sample days, menu plans, examples….something. I have no clue what to eat daily. What do I eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner? What snack options do I have? What do I do when I go out to eat, etc.
To me, The Hormone Diet is a jumble–a mass of confusion. It is not structured well. It is not well organized, and, mainly, it does not seem to have a voice. No interesting stories of real people and their diet problems, which I find quite interesting, and which I really learn from and can relate to. But not in this book. Perhaps the poor writing and lack of clincial experience is the result of it being put together by a ND, not a MD. I bet most people don’t realize this, but it is a very, very significant thing I must point out. The difference is profound. As a result, The Hormone Diet is bland, has no personality and just confusing. It just left me–that is the best way I can sum it up—it left me. Very little substance. It is more of a course book for study, and, to me, just falls flat. As I said: I remember very little from reading this book. I do not know where to turn to reference what is beneficial, what is not. No explanations, no background, nothing is offered, nothing is given. So, as a result, the book cannot really be used as a reference guide—and that is what I want in a diet book. I see absoluely no sample days that I can follow.
Anyway, to sum up, in The Hormone Diet, I neither see nor get any personal message, any instruction. I see a short life span for The Hormone Diet. As someone else said in their review, opt for The Perfect 10 Diet, or the book by Jillian Michaels, and any book by the wonderful Suzanne Somers, but absoluely and without question, don’t waste your time and especially your money with The Hormone Diet. Happy eating!

I purchased this book after reading all the amazing reviews on amazon.ca (my cousin who lives in Canada recommended it – it’s a #1 bestseller there). I am SO happy I did! Thanks to The Hormone Diet, I have COMPLETELY turned my life around. So far, I have dropped from 368lbs to 311lbs (57lbs!) and I am fitting into pants that I haven’t worn in three years! I can’t believe that I have NO more cravings, late night binges or hunger pangs. My blood pressure is a perfect 120/72 and pulse is 79. I used to have to take an entire cocktail of drugs in order to fall asleep and I am now sleeping naturally from 11:00pm – 7:00am and springing out of bed every morning! When I started I could only do 10min of cardio twice a day and now I am up to 30 minutes of cardio twice daily (three times around the track). And guess what – my doctor cut my antidepressant AND my pain medication in half and I have never felt better! My goal is to get to 250lbs and I have no doubt that I can do it with the help of this book. Thank you Dr. Turner – I feel like a whole new MAN!!!
